The Science of Body Aging: What Most People Miss

Facial skincare is taken seriously. People commit to multi-step routines, in-clinic treatments, and targeted actives to preserve the face. But look beyond the jawline to the chest, arms, legs, or back of the neck, and the skin tells a different story.

Crepey texture. Sun damage. Pigmentation. Roughness. The contrast is clear.

If you’re aiming for youthful skin, your face can’t be the only focus. The rest of your skin is just as vulnerable, and often more neglected.

The Structure of Body Skin

Body skin is thicker than facial skin, especially on the arms, legs, and back. The stratum corneum is more compact, and the dermis has greater depth. This gives it more resistance to early aging signs like fine lines or sagging.

But thicker doesn’t mean protected. Body skin contains fewer sebaceous glands, holds less moisture, and is more frequently exposed to friction, heat, and UV damage. Most people don't moisturise their body daily. They rarely apply sunscreen to it. Almost no one re-applies throughout the day.

So while signs of aging may appear later than on the face, the cumulative damage still occurs. Collagen still breaks down, pigmentation still forms, and skin still thins over time.

Crepey Skin and Collagen Loss

Crepey skin is a common concern, especially on the inner arms, thighs, and chest. It’s caused by degradation of collagen and elastin, compounded by dehydration and barrier impairment.

This is more than just a texture issue. It reflects structural weakening of the dermal matrix, reduced fibroblast activity, and water loss. As collagen density decreases, the skin no longer springs back the way it used to. It wrinkles more easily, even without deep folds.

This process is amplified when barrier function is compromised by harsh cleansing, UV damage, or chronic inflammation.

The Damage of the Sun: Aging and Risk

In Australia, the sun is not just a cosmetic concern. It’s a health risk. UV radiation is the number one cause of premature skin aging and is also the leading environmental factor in skin cancer development.

UVA penetrates deep into the dermis, where it accelerates collagen breakdown through oxidative stress and the activation of matrix metalloproteinases. UVB is more superficial but causes direct DNA damage and inflammation.

Together, UVA and UVB:

  • Degrade collagen and elastin
  • Increase pigmentation irregularities
  • Impair wound healing
  • Suppress immune response in the skin
  • Trigger mutations that lead to skin cancers

Any part of the body regularly exposed, such as the arms, shoulders, legs, chest, and the back of the neck, is at risk. Clothing does not always provide sufficient protection. Loose weaves, wet fabrics, and prolonged exposure can allow UV to penetrate through.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Ignoring body protection is not just an aesthetic oversight. It is a serious health concern.

The Back and Sides of the Neck

Most people apply skincare to the front of their neck and stop there. But the back and sides of the neck are regularly exposed to the sun while walking, driving, or working outdoors. They are also subject to friction from hair, collars, and sweat.

Over time, this results in horizontal lines, pigmentation, and textural changes that don’t match the more cared-for areas of the face or décolletage. Treating the entire neck is essential. That includes the front, back, and behind the ears.

Barrier Breakdown from Harsh Products

Most body washes and soaps are stripping. They contain sulfates, high-pH surfactants, or aggressive fragrance compounds that compromise the skin’s acid mantle.

This leads to increased transepidermal water loss, higher sensitivity, and disrupted microbiome balance. When the barrier is impaired, everything else breaks down faster. Hydration declines, inflammation rises, and the skin becomes more reactive and visibly dry.

A gentle, barrier-safe cleanser is the foundation of every good skincare routine, whether for the face or body.

Start Before You See the Signs

Once collagen and elastin are lost, restoring them is difficult. Topical products can improve hydration and firmness, but they cannot rebuild the dermal architecture from scratch. Prevention is far more effective than correction.

If you’re in your 20s or 30s, supporting your barrier and protecting from UV can delay visible aging for decades. If you’re older and starting to see damage, the goal shifts to reducing inflammation, restoring hydration, and supporting cellular recovery.

In either case, consistency is key.

What You Can Do to Support Body Skin

  • Moisturise your body daily, especially after showering
  • Use a barrier-safe, non-stripping body wash
  • Apply sunscreen to sun-exposed areas, not just your face
  • Reapply SPF if outdoors for extended periods
  • Wear long sleeves, hats, and UV-protective clothing where possible
  • Avoid sun exposure during high-UV periods, especially in peak summer
  • Tint your car windows to reduce UVA exposure while driving
  • Treat the full neck, including the front, sides, and back, with skincare and SPF
  • Focus on high-friction zones like knees, elbows, and underarms

Roccoco Recommendations for Body Support

Frangipani and Lychee Body Wash

A microbiome-supportive, barrier-safe body cleanser formulated for all skin types and all ages, including mature and thinning skin.
